Chichu Art Museum

地中美術館A museum founded in 2004. The museum, designed by Tadao Ando, features permanent installations by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria. This museum, created through a synergy of ideas between the artist and the architect, can be considered a colossal site-specific work in its entirety. To preserve the beautiful landscape of the Seto Inland Sea, the majority of the building is buried underground. Despite being underground, natural light fills the space, allowing the artworks and the environment to change their expressions moment by moment throughout the day and across the seasons.

The Chichu Art Museum offers advance reservations (online booking, credit card payment). Purchasing tickets in advance makes it easier to plan your visit, so

We recommend purchasing tickets in advance.

Lee Ufan Museum

李禹煥美術館This is a museum that is the result of a collaboration between internationally acclaimed artist Lee Ufan, who is currently active mainly in Europe, and architect Tadao Ando. Inside the semi-underground structure, paintings and sculptures from the 1970s to the present are exhibited, creating a sense of tranquility and dynamism in the space by resonating with the architecture.
This museum, situated in a valley surrounded by the sea and mountains, offers a quiet time for contemplation, allowing us to look back at our origins in a society overflowing with possessions, while nature, the building, and the artworks echo each other.

Benesse House Museum

ベネッセハウス ミュージアムThis facility, which opened in 1992, is a hotel and museum complex designed by Tadao Ando with the concept of "coexistence of nature, architecture, and art."
In addition to the collected works, site-specific works created by artists specifically for this location are permanently installed within the museum. The artists themselves choose the locations and create their works. The artworks are not confined to the exhibition spaces but are installed throughout the facility, and are also scattered along the surrounding coastline and within the woods. Enjoying unexpected encounters with artworks while strolling through the surrounding areas, filled with the abundant nature of the Seto Inland Sea, is another way to experience this facility.

Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery: Corridor of Time

The Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery, the culmination of Sugimoto's long-term engagement with Naoshima,杉本博司ギャラリー画像The concept was conceived by connecting Naoshima and Enoura, which can be considered a starting point of his creative activities, from the circumstances that led to the creation of Odawara's "Enoura Observatory," which can be called the artist's ultimate work. While the Enoura Observatory focuses on architecture and garden design, this gallery is a unique exhibition facility in the world where visitors can continuously and authentically appreciate Hiroshi Sugimoto's representative photographic works, designs, and sculptures. "Corridor of Time" reflects the characteristics of Tadao Ando's architecture that encourages visitors to wander through and experience architectural spaces and natural environments, Hiroshi Sugimoto's ongoing questions about time, and their long-standing relationship with Naoshima. It is intended to allow visitors to experience the changes in nature and the grand flow of time, and to contemplate history and the act of living.

Sugimoto Hiroshi Gallery: Time Reflected is available for advance reservations (online booking, credit card payment). We recommend purchasing tickets in advance, as this will make it easier to plan your visit.
