Island azalea
2021/03/24
The island azalea is a representative flower that grows wild in our town and is commonly called the mountain azalea. The island azalea is a common name for this flower and it is said that Emperor Sutoku, who has deep ties to the island, dearly loved them. Every year from late March to May, the entire town's mountains are covered in a pale pink, blooming magnificently. - From the Naoshima Town Website -
Island azaleas, which are also the town flower of Naoshima Town.
The photo was taken near the fishing park on March 15th of this year. I think the blossoms opened a little earlier this year.
Wild island azaleas are smaller than the large azaleas commonly seen in parks and gardens. They bloom without leaves, and each individual flower is rather delicate. However, after April, they begin to bloom all at once, dyeing the island's mountains pink. We look forward to it.

They bloom tenaciously even in the shade!
